4th Grade Flynn Workshop

                                         In preparation for the Flynn Theater Field Trip! 

     Today Mrs. Kingsley's and Mrs. Dodge's classes learned about the Peking Acrobats show.  4th grade students will be taking a field trip on Friday to see them at the Flynn. The Peking Acrobats are a Chinese group. All of their shows are different. But they always start off with the traditional lion dance. They do the lion dance so that they can scare off all the bad luck! If you want to learn more about the Peking Acrobats go to the Flynn website  . Shh! We Have a Plan

Both 2nd grade classes acted out the book, Shh! We Have a Plan.

Wings, tails, hats and ears were created by students in Mrs. Pettibon's art class.  The books was read, and the play was created and practiced during library class with Ms. Foley.  Below are some pictures and comments from students about this experience.

Biomes in grade 5

During the month of March, the fifth grade studied different biomes with Mrs. Racine in science class.  A biome is a place where a variety of different species live.   Students are learning that there  are many different biomes in the world.  

Groups of students in each 5th grade class painted a few of the many biomes in the world.  Some examples of chosen biomes were freshwater lake, estuary, savanna, and river.   With Mrs. Pettibon's help in the art room,  groups drew and planned out a biome scene.   Next students painted the biome scene on a huge oval piece of paper.  The final products are finished, and they look great!  A big thanks to Mrs. Pettibon for her help.

School Wide POPS Award

On Thursday, March 10, the whole school celebrated a POPS award. It was movie day at school!  Kindergartners got to pick between 2 movies, and grades 1-6 had the choice of six movies (six teachers). Students had many options for movies including: the LEGO Movie, Page Master, The Never-ending Story, and much more. This award lasted from 9:30-11:00, when students gathered in the assigned classroom that the movie of their choice was playing.

"I liked the movie, the Never-Ending Story." said fourth grader, C.W.

"I would rather do that than homework." said sixth grader J.V.

"Fun for the audience" said fifth grader C.H.

When the final S in V.U.E.S. is done, there will be another school-wide celebration!

Reading for Dr. Seuss's Birthday

On March 2, Mrs. Wenzel's sixth grade went over to Mrs. Bearor's Kindergarten class to read books by Dr. Seuss to the students in celebration of the author's birthday. Each sixth grader paired up with a student and read books such as Horton Hears a Who, The Grinch, The Cat in the Hat, The Foot Book, and more! It was an enjoyable experience for all, and we hope to do it again.

Vegetable Signs for the School Garden

The Vergennes Union Elementary School third graders painted signs for the school garden. The students studied community with Mrs. Fay. Mrs. Rapoport came in to talk to the class about the garden. As a result, the third grade decide to a community service project with Mrs. Pettibon.  They created signs for our VUES garden. The students painted on wooden boards the name of each of the 20 vegetables and herbs that are to be planted in the garden. Two students, one from each class, painted one side of each board. Thanks to the third grade, it will now be easier to find vegetables in the garden.

Willow Wheelock

Willow Wheelock is from Womens Safe in Middlebury. She came in to the sixth grade five times. The first time she taught them about Communication. The second time about Gender. The third time about Relationships and Friendships . The fourth time about the difference between Sexual Harassment and Flirting. Then, the fifth about a Safe "Go-To Person".
