POPS Assembly

On Friday, we had our POPS school wide assembly. Students from each classroom were recognized for their outstanding POPS behavior. Classrooms were recognized as well for all the POPS paws charts that were completed.  Three classrooms were tied for first with six paw charts completed. Our entire school has earned 58 paw charts that's 2,900 paw stickers!

Also at the assembly, students learned a new song and dance that goes along with the school POPS expectations. At the end of this assembly, we all danced to Rock'in Around the Christmas Tree.

4th Grade Giving Back Project

This month the fouth grade work on a project to give back to the community. Students had a bake sale during the VUES Music Concert that raised $179 dollars.  Next, the students walked to Shaw's and Kinney's to buy products to donate to the John Graham Shelter in Vergennes.

Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse

Our first graders were all set to go to the Flynn Theater on Tuesday to see Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse. They are wearing glittery movie-star sunglasses, just like Lilly's glasses in the Kevin Henkes picture book.    

Veterans' Day at VUES

VUES Book Fair is Coming in November

VUES Scholastic Book Fair

is Coming in November!

 

Nov. 3rd -6th during the school day, 7:45- 3:30

***Special Evening Hours ***

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 4th from 5-7pm

A great selection of books will be for sale at the VUES Book Fair on Monday, November 3rd through Thursday, the 6th.  Students will have an opportunity to visit the book fair during their regularly scheduled library class.

The goal of the book fair is to promote reading.  In addition, a portion of all purchases will benefit our school by generating books for the school library and/or funds for library projects.

Looking for Parent Volunteers

Parent help is needed at the book fair this year!  Help is especially needed on Monday, Nov. 3rd from 2:45 to 3:30 and Thursday, Nov. 6th from 2:45-3:30.  Please email Ms. Foley if you can help.

We interviewed Mrs. Cadoret, the new grade 5 teacher.

What is your position at VUES?

5th Grade ELA & Social Studies teacher

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Underhill and Jericho, Vermont

What do you like about your job?

ELA and Social Studies are my favorite subjects! I love to be able to help share the knowledge I have, and to help make each student’s learning experience positive and worthwhile.

Where is your classroom in the school?

My classroom in the school is the second door on your right down the long      hallway off of the lobby.

What was your favorite subject in high school?

This is a toughy….I love reading! So I would say English class. I also loved learning Latin and about where words came from a long time ago.

How long have you been teaching?

I have taught for 7 years down in Bennington, Vermont. I have taught both 4th and 5th grade.

What is your favorite animal?

I love dragonflies!!! I think they are beautiful, graceful, and remind me of the beauty that surrounds us.

Please tell us a little more about yourself.

I am married, and have a daughter who is 1 ½ years old. Her name is Haley and she has quite the personality. My dog’s name is Otis and he is a black lab/shepherd mix. We rescued him for a shelter down in southern Vermont and he was 1 of 9 in his litter. I used to play field hockey and love to watch football. I am a Giants fan! I also love to travel and have been to many places all over the United States, and Europe. I have literally been in 2 places at once before!! Standing on the Prime Meridian in England, I stood in 2 different hemispheres. There’s lots more about me, but you’ll have to come chat with me to find more out!

Healthy Eating at VUES

The ladies at the lunchroom are really watching out for us and our health with some really healthy choices during lunchtime. After an interview with Lisa Sprage, we discovered some more ways that they are making healthy choices.

Up at the VUES garden, with help from Lynne Rapoport, the lunch ladies are growing some yummy vegetables to serve during lunchtime. The garden provides vegetables for lunches in the fall, and herbs all year round.

Even though the garden currently does not grow fruit, Lisa explained that they may begin planting fruit sometime, but that it will only be possible if more help is offered for the garden.

Some of the local farms they rely on are Norris Berry Farm, Lumiere in Ferrisburgh, Maple Meadows Farm, and Champlain Orchards.

Leaf People

Kindergarten students created leaf people in library class this week.   First we read Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert, then we searched the school yard for interesting leaves, and finally we created our own leaf people!

              Brent and Maya have been with us for two weeks. We sat down and interviewed them during lunch. They were nice to let us do it!  There were smiles and laughs the whole time.

 Here is Brent's interview:

Why did you decide to be a performer?

I like juggling, and I had a job I was not happy with, and I

found a way to turn my hobby into my job.

What is your favorite part of your job?

Maya.

How long have you been performing?

I started performing by my self in 2005, and I have been

with Maya for 5 years.

Why did you decide to come to VUES?

Mrs. Pettibon invited us.

What size ice cream cone do you normally get?

Medium.

Did you go to school to learn how to perform?

Yes. (I learned to perform) in college and at the Celebration Barn Theater in Maine.

What is the hardest part of your job?

When you get sick and tired.

Where was the coolest place you have visited because of your job?

China was pretty cool.

Please tell us a little more about performing.  

It is always different, and you have to be in the present

moment all the time.

I was in my first play in kindergarten, I really liked it and kept going.

It is not easy, you get nervous, you make mistakes, but you learn from them.

Iceman Artifacts

This fall, the sixth grade in Mr.Sam's class learned about the Iceman of the Alps (Otzi).  

The Iceman was found in the Alps frozen in a glacier by Austrians in 1991.  He was an important find for historians because he had a rare, valuable copper ax.  His body was preserved for over 5000 years!   Below are photos of the sixth grade with their homemade artifacts that relate to the Iceman's life.  There was a variety of artifacts including: weapons, tools, and art.

Here are a couple quotes from students about what they thought about this activity.

"It was cool.  I'm better with hands-on (activities) than with paper and pencil."

"It was helpful 'cause it was hands on.  I like doing these types of projects."

Peter Gould Performance at School

All students that read over the summer, filled out the log, and handed it in to Ms. Foley, were invited to a special assembly featuring Peter Gould, the storyteller and clown. This performance on Friday, September 12th, consisted of magic acts, miming, and fun.

Secret Agents Butterfly and Honeymoon

YES! Theater put on a hilarious show in the VUES school gym on September 29.  They were secret agents from Britain, trying to capture Dr. Awful ( Mr. Sawyer). The whole school could not resist laughing out loud, and that includes the teachers! We are glad to have Brent and Maya perform here at VUES.
